Rain

It rained very heavily in the night, and after breakfast. I read Redmon O’Hanlon’s ‘Congo Journey’ and waited for it to stop, wondering why it feels less humid when it is pouring with rain.

The humidity was intolerable after it had stopped raining so I decided to go for a run. Behind the Diamond Cave ‘Resort’ (I scoff, but it does have a nice swimming pool) a track leads into the jungle and over the hill to Tonsai Beach. During the high season - November - January - the demand for rooms must be very high. There are bungalows right into the jungle; dank, humid places smelling of mould, the bamboo slats slowly rotting back into the forest.

The rain started again, heavily, about twenty minutes into my run. There didn’t seem any point in turning back, so I ploughed on getting steadily more drenched. Actually, with the humidity being so high, the rain didn’t make too much difference, although my trainers got steadily heavier until I was squishing loudly with each stride.
