Penang to KL

I travelled back to KL today, just over four hours by airconditioned luxury coach from Penang. Long distance transport has certainly improved here in recent years, thanks to better vehicles and toll roads. The fare was less than four pounds Sterling.

I am staying in the Heritage Station Hotel, which I booked on the internet. A mistake. It is an interesting building and it does have history. The reception, breakfast room and corridors are even attractive and have a certain wow factor on first acquaintance. The rooms are grim however - poorly lit, badly furnished and only just clean enough to stop me from walking back out again.

Why do you always find iron brand marks on the carpets of cheap hotels? Are the occupants of cheap hotels generally stupid? Don’t they realise that a hot iron will burn the cheap nylon carpets? Come to think of it, why do cheap hotels use carpets anyway? They get stained, burned with cigarette ends, fall victim to the occupants laundry skills and are difficult to vacuum quickly. Tiles or marble would be much better.

Another gripe. Why can’t hotels learn to light their rooms well? Most of the places I have stayed in here make no use of the abundant natural light that is available beyond their walls and seem to have followed a formula to create the most depressing room lighting imaginable.
