English in Malaysia

At the White House Hotel, which is grey and run down, they advertise an “Airconditioned behind”. In the toilet at the hotel at the top of Penang Hill: “If flow does not stop, pull knob.”

Heritage appears to have two meanings when applied to hotels in Malaysia. In the case of the Heritage Hotel in the Cameron Highlands, Heritage means newly bulit in mock Tudor style, in an area where the natural heritage has been destroyed to make room for the hotel. In the case of the Heritage Station Hotel, where I am staying in KL, heritage is apparently taken as a command - thou shalt not clean or maintain these premises lest they become popular places to stay and we shall have to work hard.
