In a different life I lived on Pulau Penyengat, a small tropical island in the Riau Archipelago - between Singapore and Java. Once the capital and centre of and important Malay civilization, it was idyllic; unspoiled, no tourists, deserted white sand beaches, swaying coconut palms, deserted royal palaces and forts. I rented a house from King David, or rather Raja Daud, direct descendent of the last Riau sultan. I quickly got bored and escaped daily by boat to the Chinese market on the next island.
In the restaurants in Railay, I have heard the word paradise many times over the last three days. So what is paradise? For most people here paradise is a beach not far from a nice restaurant with familiar food, a place with a good view and a supply of alcohol and cannabis. Having travelled half way round the world helps too, that and not having to work.
