26 June 2008, Bahrain airport

Piped, pleasant and almost white music from Costa Coffee, an unintelligible airport announcement, two loud, disparate Arabic songs, an Omani singing and the general cacophony of a coffee shop run by two raucous Filipinos and I was contemplating buying earplugs. The distorted but loud Arabic music was coming from the well fattened Arabs at the next table. Admiring their top of the line mobile phones they were comparing play lists and their gadget’s power to set the fat rolls jiggling. The other customers were politely ignoring the noise. Well that, or the were less easily irritated than me.

I weighed up the options: have my coffee transferred to a paper cup and take it elsewhere, move tables or ask them to use headphones. I went for the last option, but only after carefully considering the chances of provoking an aggressive reaction. They didn’t speak English, but my body language and gestures were obviously effective as they packed up their phones and left.
